Cannot sign in with Google

Sign-in goes through Google. Almost every failure here is the network, not your account — start there.

Check the network first

DubTab signs you in with your Google account, so the sign-in step needs to reach Google. If your network cannot, sign-in fails while everything else on your computer looks fine — this is by far the most common cause, and it is not something a setting inside DubTab can fix.

  1. 1
Open a Google page in the same browser

Try google.com or accounts.google.com. If that does not load either, the network is the answer and nothing else on this page will help.

  2. 2
    Switch networks

A phone hotspot is the fastest way to test. If sign-in works there and not on your usual connection, the problem is that connection — a corporate firewall, a school network, or a regional block.

  3. 3
Turn a VPN on, or off

Both directions are worth trying. A VPN can be what makes Google reachable, and it can also be what breaks the handoff back to DubTab.

Extension: clicking Sign in does nothing

Sign-in happens in the popup and nowhere else — there is no sign-in button on the dashboard, so do not go looking for one there.

  • Google opens its own window to sign you in. If your browser blocks pop-up windows for this site, that window never appears — allow it and try again.
  • If your browser has several profiles, make sure you are in the one that is signed in to Google.
  • Close the popup and open it again before retrying. A half-finished attempt can leave the button unresponsive.

Windows app: the browser does not open, or never comes back

The desktop app hands you to your browser to sign in, then the browser hands you back. Either half of that can fail on a locked-down machine.

  1. 1
    Copy the sign-in link instead

The app offers the link so you do not need it to launch anything. Paste it into any browser on the same computer and finish signing in there.

  2. 2
    Come back to the app

Once the browser says you are signed in, switch back to DubTab. It picks up the session on its own.

Still stuck

Tell us three things and we can usually answer in one reply: which platform, what happens when you click Sign in (nothing at all, an error, a window that closes immediately), and whether Google pages load normally on that network.

Common questions

Why does DubTab need a Google account?

Signing in with Google is the only sign-in method, and it is what ties your plan, your minutes and your session history to you across the browser extension and the Windows app. Because it goes through Google, a network that cannot reach Google cannot complete sign-in.

Sign-in works on my phone hotspot but not on my office network.

That points at the office network. Corporate firewalls and school networks often block the Google endpoints sign-in relies on. Ask whoever runs that network to allow Google accounts, or sign in once on another connection.

The browser opened, I signed in, but the desktop app still says signed out.

The handoff back to the app did not complete. Switch to the DubTab window and give it a moment — it picks the session up on its own. If it does not, copy the sign-in link from the app and complete it in a browser on the same computer.
